Every House of Shadowlight puppy begins their journey with thoughtful planning, attentive care, and a foundation built on health, confidence, and love. From the earliest stages of pregnancy to the day your puppy joins your family, we believe every milestone matters.
Before the Puppies Arrive
Our journey begins with careful breeding plans focused on health, temperament, and the preservation of the Havanese breed. Once pregnancy is confirmed, we prepare for the arrival of the litter and begin planning for each puppy's future.
2. The Waiting List & Family Interviews
Before Birth Through the Early Weeks
Prospective families are invited to complete our application and interview process. We take time to learn about each household, lifestyle, expectations, and the kind of companion they hope to welcome.
Families are approved based on compatibility with our puppies and breeding philosophy. An interview or application does not guarantee a puppy placement. Approved families receive updates as the litter progresses.
Birth to 2 Weeks
Our puppies are born and raised in our home, where their earliest days focus on warmth, nourishment, maternal care, and close observation. We monitor their growth and development while allowing mom and her newborns the quiet, attentive care they need.
Puppies' eyes typically begin opening around 10–14 days of age, marking one of their first exciting developmental milestones.
Weeks 2–4
As their senses develop, puppies begin exploring their surroundings, taking their first steps, and interacting more with their littermates.
We introduce gentle, positive handling and age-appropriate sensory experiences to help establish a foundation for confidence and learning.
Approximately 5–6 Weeks of Age
Once puppies are developmentally ready for us to better observe their emerging personalities, approved families who have completed the interview process may begin selecting their puppy according to our placement process.
We consider temperament, activity level, individual characteristics, and the family's lifestyle when helping match each puppy with the right home. Coat color and appearance may be part of a family's preferences, but our priority is a thoughtful, lifelong match.
Selection timing and order are communicated to approved families in advance. Final placement remains subject to our assessment of the puppy's suitability and readiness.
6. Learning, Playing & Growing
Weeks 4–7
Puppies begin transitioning to solid puppy food, developing social skills, playing with littermates, and learning about the world around them.
We continue age-appropriate socialization, gentle grooming introductions, handling, and exposure to everyday household sights and sounds. Veterinary care includes age-appropriate examinations, parasite prevention, and the beginning of the puppy vaccination series when appropriate.
Weeks 7–8
As the puppies approach eight weeks, we focus on their continued growth, independence, and readiness for their next chapter. Puppies are eating independently, building confidence, and becoming familiar with routines that will help ease their transition.
Families receive information about feeding, care, veterinary records, and preparing their homes for their new companion.
8. Gotcha Day — Coming Home!
At 8 Weeks of Age, When Ready
The day we've all been waiting for! Puppies may join their approved families at approximately eight weeks of age, provided they are healthy, developmentally ready, and cleared for transition.
Each family receives their puppy's available health and veterinary records, care instructions, and guidance for making the transition as smooth and reassuring as possible.
Our commitment doesn't end at the handoff. We want every House of Shadowlight puppy to have a lifetime of love, companionship, and a family who understands the privilege of sharing their life with a Havanese.
