Velcro Dogs: Your Little Shadow

If you dream of a dog who wants to be involved in everything you do, the Havanese may be your perfect companion.

Often affectionately called Velcro dogs, Havanese love to stay close to their people. They want to sit in your lap, curl up beside you, follow you from room to room, and supervise even the most ordinary household activities.

Cooking dinner? Your little shadow may be right at your feet. Sitting on the couch? Expect an invitation to cuddle. Getting ready to leave? Don't be surprised if two bright eyes follow your every move.

Havanese may struggle when left alone for long periods, and some can develop separation-related distress. They need to learn gradually that being alone is safe, with age-appropriate practice, enrichment, and a predictable routine.

If your lifestyle regularly keeps you away from home for most of the day, consider whether you can arrange reliable companionship and care.

Another pet can help provide company, but a second dog or cat is not a substitute for human interaction and does not guarantee that a Havanese will be comfortable alone.

If your Havanese will not regularly accompany you when you go out, having another compatible pet in the household may be beneficial. Introductions, supervision, and the individual temperaments of both animals matter.

The beautiful Havanese coat requires regular attention. Although the breed is often described as low-shedding, low-shedding does not mean low-maintenance.

Daily combing and brushing: Pay particular attention to friction areas, such as behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and between the legs, where tangles and mats can develop.
Daily eye care: Gently wipe away discharge from the corners of the eyes with an appropriate, clean eye-care cloth or product.
Daily toothbrushing: Regular brushing with dog-safe toothpaste helps maintain oral health. Small breeds can be particularly prone to dental problems.
Routine bathing and professional grooming: Your schedule will depend on coat length, lifestyle, and grooming goals.
Regular nail, ear, and paw care: Nails need humane trimming, ears need checking, and paw pads need attention.

Grooming is not merely cosmetic. It is an important part of keeping your dog comfortable and healthy. Puppies should be introduced to handling and grooming gently and positively from an early age.

They Can Be Underfoot

A Havanese wants to be where you are. That can mean following you through the kitchen, settling beside your chair, or appearing beneath your feet when you least expect it.

This is part of their companion-dog nature, but it requires awareness. Families should learn to move carefully, use gates or designated resting spaces when appropriate, and teach puppies where to settle safely.

Beyond the initial cost of acquiring a puppy, families should budget for quality nutrition, veterinary examinations, vaccinations, parasite prevention, dental care, grooming, training, supplies, and unexpected medical expenses. They Are Small Dogs That Need Thoughtful Handling

Their sturdy nature does not make them indestructible. Young children should always be supervised around dogs, and puppies need protection from rough handling, accidental falls, and overly enthusiastic play. Families should teach children to respect a puppy's space, allow uninterrupted rest, and handle their companion gently.

Tip: Havanese like paper and shoes and will steal them to play. They aren't being bad; they just want your attention. This is why positive reinforcement training to play with approved toys is necessary. Chasing this clown around the room only encourages the trickster behavior. Utilize patience and redirection.
